Psoriasis treatment : Choosing The Right Psoriasis Remedy
Posted Thursday, November 22, 2007
Psoriasis is a debilitating skin condition which manifests itself in scaly patches on the skin. In severe cases the joints are also affected. There is no known cause however it does appear to have genetic qualities (can be passed from one generation to the next). Some people have very mild Psoriasis whilst others suffer from severe skin and joint problems as a result of the disease.
Thankfully there are a number of Psoriasis remedy options available to the sufferer. These include:
- Topical treatments
- Pills
- Phototherapy / Light Therapy
- Photochemotherapy
- Systemic treatment
- Alternative/Herbal Treatments
Psoriasis Treatments - Topical Treatments
Topical treatments show good results in many people. These psoriasis topical remedies include corticosteroids and dithranol amongst others. Many topical treatments are also combined with Salicylic acid which can help to remove dead skin. Moisturizers are also effective with long term use.
Psoriasis Treatments - Pills
As far as pills go, there are psoriasis remedy options such as Oxsoralen. Oxsoralen are capsules which claim to "improve severe, recalcitrant, disabling psoriasis in 84% of the patients". This has been proven through various studies. Oxsoralen needs to be combined with exposure to UVA (ultraviolet) light. The ultraviolet light has a greater effect on the skin when the person is taking Oxsoralen.
The special name for this particular therapy is PUVA which refers to the combination of Oxsoralen and UV light exposure. PUVA stands for "Psoralen plus UVA light".
Psoriasis Treatments - Phototherapy or light therapy
Phototherapy or light therapy can involve simply getting some sunlight everyday which can clear mild psoriasis lesions. Caution should be taken not to burn the skin however.
In addition to this medical therapy, there are also some interesting psoriasis natural or alterative remedies which are worth a try. These include:
- Modification of lifestyle and diet - healthy eating, sunshine (with caution), saltwater swimming and adequate rest has been shown to improve the appearance of Psoriasis in some people.
- Neem oil which has been used for 6000 years in India is believed by some people to reduce psoriasis.
- Some people have seen results from fasting however it is not advisable to undergo this therapy without doctor approval.
- Epsom salt has been shown to reduce Psoriasis in people.
- "Climatotherapy" - where you live in a certain climate that is ideal for treating Psoriasis. A popular location is the Dead Sea.
- Herbal treatments such as Oil of Oregano
It is worthwhile trying some of the alternative or herbal psoriasis remedy options however I can also highly recommend the PUVA therapy using Oxsoralen and UV exposure. It has been scientifically studied with positive results in mild and severe Psoriasis sufferers.
There are so many Psoriasis remedy options that it can be difficult knowing where to start. Speak to your doctor to find out firstly how severe your Psoriasis is, and secondly what course of action he recommends. Some doctors may not be aware of Oxsoralen and PUVA so it can be worthwhile printing off some information from the Internet to show your physician. He or she can then assist you in a controlled usage of this effective psoriasis remedy.
