Hair Loss Treatment With Minoxidil

Belonging to a class of drugs called hair growth stimulants, Minoxidil treats inherited hair loss (androgenetic alopecia), the most common form of hair loss, in men and women. Used originally for treatment of high blood pressure, it later became popular for stimulating hair growth when this particular symptom came up as an accompanying side effect with Minoxidil induced blood pressure management. Researchers worked on this lead and developed Topical Minoxidil (Rogaine) as a hair loss treatment medication. On the crowns of men's heads and on the forehead area of women, Minoxidil has shown good results in hair growth and slowing hair loss. Available in a 2% and 5% solution, Minoxidil can be obtained without a prescription.

In a randomized, placebo-controlled full 48-week trial of 5% and 2% Topical Minoxidil solutions in the treatment of female pattern hair loss (reported by Lucky AW, Piacquadio DJ, Ditre CM, et al in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. 2004), out of two hundred sixty patients completing the trial, those receiving 5% Minoxidil showed statistically significant improvement over the control group with respect to nonvellus hair count and investigator and patient clinical assessments (i.e., all 3 main outcome measures). Patients using the 2% solution reported improvement in hair count and investigator assessment parameters only. No major adverse side effects were reported.

For good results, it has to be applied on the dry scalp using a dropper or sprayer at least twice daily for four to six months. Younger patients and patients who have been losing hair for less than five years are likely to have better results. It must be used daily. Any regrown hair will gradually be lost and the scalp will most likely appear the same as before treatment if the Minoxidil therapy is discontinued midway. Occasionally, there may be some irritation in the scalp when using Minoxidil. If the problem persists, a dermatological consultation can come of help.
