Eczema is a general term used to refer to a variety of different types of inflammation (dermatitis) of the upper layers of a person's skin. Typically, people suffer from eczema have areas of the skin which are affected, and these areas become red, dry and itchy, may also swell up, and in many cases, crack, blister or flake, and even bleed.

Eczema is not only uncomfortable, but it can be embarrassing too, so people with the condition really want to be rid of it. The best first step is to discuss the matter with your doctor. Your doctor will then, if necessary, refer you to a dermatologist (a skin specialist). This is to ensure that you are correctly diagnosed, and get the most suitable treatment.

Seeing your doctor is of course just the first step. Even some relatively small changes in the way that you live your life can often be incredibly effective at combatting eczema problems. It should be said that while many people believe that lifestyle changes can make a big difference, there is of course no guarantee that they will solve the problem.

Begin by checking the products that you use when washing yourself and your clothing. On the whole, it's probably best to try to avoid strongly perfumed products, or items containing harsh chemicals. Ideally, you should use a liquid detergent and rinse your clothes twice during each wash cycle. If you're unsure or these tips aren't really helping, just try experimenting with different brands - you might be surprised at how much difference this can make.

Another thing to examine is the fabrics used in your clothing and bedding. Some people find that wool and synthetics may cause their eczema to flare up, so bear that in mind. Keeping clothes and linens (especially bed sheets) scrupulously clean can also help.

It may take a while before these types of tips has an effect, which of course doesn't help if you need immediate relief. If you're itching like crazy and need immediate relief, don't scratch that will only worsen the problem - instead try a long soak in a cool oatmeal bath - you'll be amazed at how much you feel.
