Finding Eczema Relief

People that suffer from eczema will often find it hard to obtain any relief from the condition. The skin can be so inflamed and irritated that you find yourself constantly itching which then just makes the problem even worse. It is a difficult cycle to break unless you take action to work through the various approaches that can provide genuine eczema relief.

Eczema is a common ailment and studies have recently shown a continual increase in the percentage of people that suffer from it. It is used as a collective name to describe a range of skin disorders. The condition usually presents as patches of dry, red skin which can become extremely itchy. This can lead to major problems as people naturally feel the need to itch the affected area and this just makes things increasingly worse.

If you don't address it, you could soon find that you are in a constant cycle of itching and scratching which never looks likely to stop. This is the time to tackle the problem from another perspective. Eczema is not a contagious disease, although some people seem to react that way to sufferers of the condition. It is actually an issue related to your immune system and is really a way of your body indicating that it isn't coping with something it has encountered.

The Two Approaches To Eczema Relief

There are two main approaches to address this problem. One is from the dietitian's point of view and looks at what dietary adjustments can be made to eliminate flare-ups. The other is from a dermatologist's point of view and looks at ways to soothe your skin.

As most people know, skin is actually the largest organ of the body so it is worth making an effort to take care of it properly. Atopic eczema is the most common example of the condition and it is usually allergy related. You therefore should try to examine what trigger is really causing the problem in the first place. It could be a wide range of different things like maybe the new washing powder you just started using or that perfumed soap that you just bought. Look to use alternative and natural products like non-biological powder or non-perfumed soap.

It is very important to moisturize regularly and it becomes even more critical during a bout of itchiness. Use a moisturizer that has anti-inflammatory properties that will work to restore your skin barrier and reduce the chance of infection. In addition, the fatty acid that is found in primrose oil and black currant oil can also assist to mend the layers of the skin. You can apply creams, lotions, or emollients - whichever you feel comfortable with. It should be noted though, that studies have indicated that they will be more effective if they contain aloe vera, primrose oil, tea tree oil, or calendula.

With respect to the dietary approach, the initial step is to avoid all foods that you may be intolerant to. The most likely foods on your allergy list are likely to be nuts, types of fish and possibly yeast. Your strategy should be to make your skin as healthy as possible from the inside out. This may include managing your intake of healthy vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Try to limit your sugar intake and also stay clear of processed foods as much as possible. Eat plenty of green and leafy vegetables (like cabbage and kale) which are known to be great for skin and overall health.

Everyone has different and specific dietary needs so some experimentation will be required. Hopefully you will soon discover a solution that provides much needed eczema relief and may even help to banish the problem forever.
