Posted Wednesday, March 18, 2009
Scalp Eczema is one of the type of eczema which can affect anyone. Scalp is easily prone to eczema as it can be oily in nature due to the presence of hair follicles and sebaceous glands.
The symptoms of scalp eczema include dry itchy scaly skin in the form of mild to severe dandruff. Also the affected area may develop redness and excessive scratching may lead to blisters and crusts.
The causes of scalp eczema include oily skin, history of eczema in the family, changes in temperature, stress, allergies or any other type of illness.
It is important that scalp eczema is not taken lightly and care should be taken to immediately start its treatment. As it is for some people, scalp eczema is accompanied by some hair loss and if it is left untreated it can worsen the situation and may lead to hair loss that is permanent in nature.
Also as far as possible, scratching the area should be strictly avoided as it may lead to secondary infections and spread further. It however is not contagious.
Scalp eczema is usually treated with a good medicated shampoo which contains either or a combination of zinc, salicylic acid, sulfur, coal tar etc which is used regularly. It is suggested to leave the shampoo on hair after gentle massaging for 3-5 minutes before rinsing off thoroughly for best results.Using lukewarm water rather than hot water for shower is also a good way of treating this condition.
In some many cases topical steroid treatments in the form of ointments are often prescribed, these though effective provide only short term relief and the symptoms generally come back after a while.
Shampoos prepared at home from natural ingredients are an excellent way of treating eczema on the scalp. These tend to be mild and yet are far more effective and give more long lasting cure.
