Baby Eczema : Caring for your baby's eczema

By: Mel Sinclair

There is nothing more heart wrenching for a parent than to see their beautiful baby in pain or discomfort.

Eczema is a frustrating condition for many parents as they struggle to control the uncomfortable symptoms it is causing to their baby's skin. Eczema is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that may affect a baby as young as 2 months old.

Whilst it is a very individual condition and each child will suffer differently eczema does have many characteristics that are present in all but the rarest cases and so the principles of treating eczema remain the same even when the specific treatments vary.

One of the most important aspects of caring for your baby's skin when they suffer from eczema is to treat the skin with lots of TLC (tender loving care). Only use products that are hypoallergenic or designed specifically for sensitive baby skin. Avoid products with perfumes or drying agents. Pat the skin dry with a soft towel rather than rubbing briskly with a scratchy towel.

Avoid Soaps

Young babies do not need a lot of cleaners used on their skin. Soap is best avoided unless the baby is actually dirty. A soak in the bath and a gentle wipe with a wet washer is all that is really needed.

Talc is also not a necessity as babies do not have body odour. Using the minimal amount of toiletries on your babies skin will help to minimise allergic reactions and skin sensitivities, and therefore eczema flare ups they have.

Use lots of Moisturisers

Moisturising is also a major aspect of caring for a baby's eczema. Eczema and dry skin go hand in hand so it is important that you moisturise baby's skin regularly. The most effective and easiest way to do this is to add a good quality bath oil to your baby's bath water each day and let them soak in it for 10 - 15 minutes.

Keeping the skin well moisturised will not only reduce the dryness of the skin but will also reduce the itchiness and irritation the baby feels. Moist skin is also more supple and less likely to crack and develop skin infections.

Eczema is a very common condition amongst babies and children. In fact it is one of the most common ailments suffered by children world wide. Arm yourself with as much information as you can about Baby Eczema and talk to other parents in a similar situation. You will be surprised how much support and free advice there is on your doorstep.
