Potential Side Effects of a Nose Job
Posted 09 July 2007
A traditional nose job is a surgical procedure. All surgical procedures have normal reactions, possible side effects, and potential complications.
When you speak of the side effects of any operation, you are usually speaking of the things that you can commonly expect to occur. In the case of a nose job, these side effects will be dependent on the type of procedure. A minor reshaping obviously will not have the same side effects as a major augmentation or reduction procedure. The type of side effects will vary depending on your overall health and the reaction of your body to the procedure. Everyone will react differently.
In almost every nose job procedure, it will be necessary to immobilize the nose with the use of a splint. This will normally have to remain in place for a week at least. Dressings may be necessary for a day or two after the procedure as well. It is very common to experience swelling and even bruising mainly around the area of the eyes. It will be impossible to breath through your nose at first, and blowing your nose needs to be avoided.
Another area of concern is the type of anesthetic used in the procedure. Some procedures require hospitalization while others are done on an outpatient basis. If you are going to go home after the procedure and any anesthetic is used, you will need to arrange to have someone drive you home and remain with you until it has completely worn off.
Major augmentation of the nose often involves the removal of cartilage from another part of your body. This area will have to be protected from infection and treated as a post surgical site as well. Pain is the most common side effect of any surgery, but pain killers will usually be proscribed routinely. The pain and swelling are usually minor in run of the mill procedures. Discomfort is a more common complaint.
Any surgical procedure has the potential for complications. Complications are those things that can potentially occur, but should not in normal circumstances. It is important to be aware of them and watchful. Excessive bleeding or unabated pain are examples of complications. They should not be ignored or accepted as normal. You will be given a list of the common side effects and potential complications that could result from the type of procedure you receive and you should pay close attention to it.
