Good Candidates for Cosmetic surgery
Posted Friday, May 18, 2007
Cosmetic surgery is a major commitment and your plastic surgeon is there to help you reach your goals. Being uninformed or indecisive is not a good candidate for cosmetic surgery. Cosmetic surgery should also not be done if you have unrealistic expectations or are just mildly curious to see how you might look. Patients with underlying emotional issues are also not good candidates as cosmetic surgery should not be used as a way of disguising emotional distress.
The following are some of the most important characteristics of people who are good candidates for cosmetic surgery:
Good physical health. One of the major prerequisites for having cosmetic surgery is to be in good physical health. This means that you should not have any acute illnesses or unmanaged chronic conditions. If you do have a long-term health issue, it does not mean you cannot undergo cosmetic surgery. For example, successful plastic surgery has been performed on diabetics and heart disease patients. It does, however, mean that you may be required to have a few extra pre-surgical tests before you can have the procedure(s) being considered. It is of utmost importance that you disclose to your plastic surgeon any health problems and concerns as soon as possible.
Good mental health and emotional stability. If you have a serious mental disorder (such as schizophrenia), you are obviously not a good candidate, nor are you a good candidate if you tend to be extremely impulsive. If you are going through a highly stressful period in your life, you may also wish to postpone cosmetic surgery until things calm down a bit.
Smoking. Smoking interferes significantly with the healing process. It is recommended that you refrain from all smoking several weeks before and after your cosmetic surgery.
Self-motivation. Good candidates are motivated by their desire to feel better about themselves, not to impress others or improve their relationships. Cosmetic surgery often does help people socially, but this is due to the patient's improved self-image rather than to his or her changed appearance.
Realistic Goals. It's extremely important for a cosmetic surgery patient to have realistic goals and expectations of what can be achieved with the procedure(s) being considered. At your consultation, you should discuss how you would like to look and what your expectations are from cosmetic surgery and how close they match that of your surgeon's.
Well informed. Good candidates educate themselves by talking with cosmetic surgery professionals and are reading up-to-date information in pamphlets, books, internet etc..Learning everything you can about the procedure(s) you are interested in, including pre-operative and post-operative requirements is highly recommended.
Highly motivated. The best candidates for cosmetic surgery are those that are highly motivated to reach their goals, and, thus willing to deal with any inconveniences, discomfort, and expenses necessary to achieve their desired result. Highly motivated patients are also more likely to follow their doctor's instructions for post-operative care and activity limitations.
