Breast Augmentation and Pregnancy

By: Sara R Goldstein

As anyone who has given birth knows, pregnancy can change many aspects of your body. Although most women agree that the changes to their body are well worth it, it can be very difficult to get your pre-pregnancy body back - and some changes are impossible to reverse without cosmetic surgery. Some of these frustrating changes are the loss of breast tissue that takes place when you breast feed and difficult-to-loose abdominal fat and sagging skin. Many women can eventually loose the weight they've gained during their pregnancy, even if it takes longer than expected, but there is no amount of exercise or dieting that can improve sagging breasts.

"Unfortunately, losing breast tissue after pregnancy is something that happens naturally," explains Dr. Robert V. Mandraccia, a prominent plastic surgeon based in Bonita Springs, Florida. "It takes place when the milk ducts develop and replace the breast tissue, causing the breasts to become less full and sag once you stop breast feeding."

For many mothers, this change in their breasts is something that can cause unhappiness and a lack of self-esteem. When this is the case, breast augmentation surgery can be used to restore the fullness and perkiness that their breasts once had.

"Breast augmentation is a great solution for mothers who want to get their pre-baby body back," says Dr. Mandraccia. "You should wait until you are done having children, however, because additional sagging can occur and in some cases the procedure can impair your ability to breastfeed again."

The Breast Augmentation Procedure

There are generally two goals to postnatal breast augmentation. One is to increase the fullness of the breasts using saline or silicone implants. The second is to lift the breast and move the nipple positioning up to the center of the breast. Oftentimes, the nipple positioning appears to move lower down on the breast when it sags, so this part of the procedure will restore the positioning and give the breasts a more aesthetically pleasing overall appearance.

There are several different techniques and incisions that can be used to perform breast augmentation. The four main incision locations are just under the breast, in the areola, in the underarm and through the belly button. If the breast and nipple will be lifted as well as augmented, surgeons like Dr. Mandraccia use an anchor-shaped incision pattern that encircles the areola and then extends down from the nipple to the crease below the breasts. Using this incision, excess skin can be removed and the nipple can be repositioned.

Recovery from breast augmentation surgery can be painful, but prescription medications can be used to control the amount of pain. Initially following the procedure, your breasts will be bruised and swollen. A surgical bra or elastic bandage will be used to help aid in the recovery process and minimize swelling for the first few weeks. Any stitches will be removed within one or two weeks, and you can generally resume non-strenuous activities at that time. It can take several months for the implants to settle into their final positioning, and scars will be apparent at first, but then fade with time.
