Sclerotherapy: Little known side effects you need to know about !
Posted 15 May 2007
Sclerotherapy is the injection of a chemical agent into the cavity of a blood vessel. These agents cause inflammation of the blood vessel walls resulting in the occlusion of the blood vessels. This procedure is used for children and young adults with vascular or lymphatic malformations. In adults, sclerotherapy is used to treat varicose veins, spider veins and hemorrhoids.
Side Effects of Sclerotherapy
The followings are the side effects of sclerotherapy:
- Bruising and Swelling
Bruising and swelling may occur at the site of needle penetration. Swelling resolves within 24 hours and bruising fades slowly within several weeks. - Telangiectatic Mats
Telangiectatic matting is the development of tiny red vessels. It develops near the injection site during the course of treatment. This network of very small veins will clear spontaneously or after repeated sclerotherapy treatment. - Cramping
Patients may encounter cramp following the injection of the ankle. Moving the toes and massage will alleviate the discomfort. - Tenderness
Tenderness may occur at the injection site. This usually persists for 1 to 2 weeks. - Urticaria and itching
Urticaria (nettle rash or uredo) is a hive-like reaction with itching may develop at the injection site. But this side effect usually eases off within 30 minutes. - Ulcer
A ulcer may develop at the injection site and heal in 1-2 weeks.
Although there are no serious side effects with sclerotherapy, patients must know the temporary side effects which may occur.
