Get Rid of Spider Veins Once and For All
Posted Monday, May 07, 2007
Spider veins are small enlarged blood vessels near the surface of the skin. They are a smaller version of varicose veins and occur in the capillaries, which are the smallest blood vessels in the body. They can develop anywhere on the body but commonly on the face around the nose, cheeks, and chin. They can also develop on the legs, specifically on the upper thigh, below the knee joint, and around the ankles. Spider veins resemble a spider web or tree branch in shape and are usually not a medical concern.
Treatment of Spider Veins - Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is the injection of a chemical agent into the cavity of a blood vessel. These agents cause inflammation of the blood vessel walls resulting in the occlusion of the blood vessels. A very fine needle is used during the injection. Patient may experience a pin prick sensation and 15-30 seconds of mild discomfort or burning at the site of injection. Some may even feel a local muscle cramp, lasting a few minutes. The injected veins completely disappear for a few seconds as blood is pushed out by the solution, but when blood flow returns they reappear. Since many of the vessels interconnect, one injection may eradicate several dozens vessels at one time. The vessels will either lighten or completely disappear. The fading occurs over the first month but may take as long as 2-3 months for some vessels. Take note that the treatment does not prevent new vessels from appearing. It only treats vessels that have been injected.
Prevention of Spider Veins
The followings are ways to help limit the number of new spider veins:
- Exercise regularly to help move blood thorough your body.
- Weight Loss. If you are overweight, losing weight will reduce pressure on your veins.
- Wear elastic Support Stocking.
- Avoid standing for a long period of time. This will help blood flow and avoid additional pressure on your veins.
- Do not cross your legs when sitting.
