Dry Skin Care Requires Special Cleansing Techniques and Products
Posted Wednesday, January 17, 2007
Dry skin can be caused by a number of factors. Sometimes the cause is internal - a deficiency or imbalance of nutrients or hormones - but the condition is more likely a result of exposure to harsh weather, environmental pollutants and harmful chemicals. Shielding lotion is the best dry skin care treatment option to protect against the elements and harmful substances, but it's also wise to minimize exposure when possible. Your cleansing routine is a good place to start.
The outer layer of your skin consists of dead skin cells and natural oils that keep moisture in the body where it belongs and protect the deeper, more delicate layers. Regular washing with soap and exposure to chemicals in cleansing products removes the natural oils allowing moisture to escape quickly. The surface layer then becomes dry and itchy and leads to premature aging, wrinkles and a generally unhealthy appearance. Here is a natural dry skin care cleansing routine that completely avoids chemicals and keeps the surface layer of the skin in tact.
- The first step is a sauna to open the pores. You can buy a facial sauna or simply fill the sink with steaming hot water, add a few drops of rose or chamomile essential oils - these are the best oils for dry skin care - place a towel over your head to trap the steam and lean over the sink for two or three minutes.
- If you need an exfoliant, try sea salt, sugar or oatmeal. Rub very gently onto the skin and rinse off.
- Now that the pores are open and excess dry skin cells are gone, apply a masque to remove dirt and impurities. Natural, raw honey is probably your best choice: it deep cleans without causing damage and its antibacterial properties prevent and treat infection. Smear it on and leave it for 15 - 30 minutes before rinsing thoroughly with warm water. Then splash with cold water to close the pores.
- The last step is to apply a shielding lotion. Thousands of doctors are now recommending a good shielding lotion for dry skin care because it bonds with the outer layer of the skin to form a protective layer that locks in natural moisture while keeping chemicals out and still allowing the skin to breathe. It protects your newly cleaned skin from environmental chemicals and pollutants and harsh weather conditions.
This routine may take a little longer than the usual morning rush allows, but even if you only use it twice a week it will help. For the rest of the week, try using a thin paste of skim milk powder and water. Milk is especially good for dry skin care. Rub it on like soap and rinse. No matter which routine you use, don't forget the shielding lotion!
