Ordinary dry skin usually isn't a serious problem and can be easily managed by making some simple lifestyle and dietary changes, and using suitable skincare products which have been formulated for dry skin condition, such as dry skin moisturiser. Chronic or severe dry skin conditions may require a dermatologist's advice. However, the following will supplement your chosen moisturiser and help improve ordinary dry skin such as:-
- Drink plenty of water or other liquids (which don't contain dehydrating caffeine) throughout the day. The recommended daily amount of water to drink is 8 glasses a day. Making sure you drink enough water is an essential way to help remedy dry skin.
- Eat foods containing the right kind of oils. Many people when dieting cut out most fats and don't get sufficient 'good' fats in their diet, which can contribute to dry skin problems. Essential fatty acids (EFAs), such as Omega-3 and Omega-6 fats found in fatty fish, Evening Primrose Oil, flax oil and raw walnuts do more than help support your immune system. They keep your skin healthy and moist. Don't rely on applying oils topically. Take 2 capsules of Evening Primrose Oil, together with 2-4 capsules of fish oil (such as cod liver oil) a day.
- Avocados are rich in monounsaturated fats and B Vitamins, Vitamins E and K, and also contain 60% more potassium than bananas, so they are an excellent source of good fats and vitamins which are essential for healthy, hydrated skin.
- The benefits of Olive Oil have been known for centuries and the ancient Greeks used to bathe in it to keep their skin soft and supple! Olive Oil contains polyphenol compounds that act as antioxidants which help prevent and repair skin damage. Unprocessed Olive Oil, such as extra virgin, can be massaged into the skin as a moisturiser. A great way to reap the benefits is to use it in a face mask once a week. Mix olive oil with half a mashed up avocado and apply to the face and neck. Leave it on for 30 minutes and then rinse off with warm water.
- Skin needs Vitamin A to repair and make it healthy. Dark green leafy vegetables, and yellow and red vegetables, contain carotenoids which are used to make Vitamin A. Include several portions of these foods every day in your diet. Supplement your diet with 5,000 to 10,000mg of Vitamin A in a multi-vitamin every day.
- Make sure you get enough Vitamin C, which is needed to make the skin protein collagen. Take 1,000 to 2,000mg a day. Potatoes, bell peppers and, of course, citrus fruits are all high in this vitamin.
- Avoid long, hot showers or baths because hot water dries out the skin. Warm water is best as it won't dry out the skin. Use a body lotion after your shower or bath which contains some of the following ingredients: glycolic acid, lactic acid, alpha-hydroxy acid, urea. Apply to skin while it is still damp as this will help trap the additional water.
- As well as using a good moisturiser on your skin, also use a sunscreen with SPF25 containing zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or avobenzone daily. Only these ingredients protect against both UVA and UVB radiation.
- Avoid using products with ingredients that dry the skin, such as acetone, alcohol and peroxide, as these will only exacerbate a dry skin problem. Use fragrance-free skin cleansers instead of ordinary soaps.
- Use a humidifier. Dry air contributes to dry skin conditions, but in normal humidity most skin is naturally supple and moist. When air is dry, as in certain climates or in a heated house or office, the air leaks moisture from the skin. Humidifying the air means your skin won't be competing for moisture. The best way to humidify the air is with a cool mist humidifier. Set one up in your bedroom and keep it on at night. You could also have one somewhere else in the house. Plants can also help humidify the air so having them around your home or office not only looks nice but they perform a very useful function too!
There are also many dry skin treatments available today that can help sufferers of dry skin conditions, making the treatment of dry skin easier than ever!
