The Botox Aging Treatment: Understanding Your Risks

By: Judy Wellsworth

How does the Botox aging treatment work?

Botox is an extremely diluted form of the toxin produced by the botulism bacterium, which has killed untold number of people who consumed it in contaminated food through the centuries. But when given in a much less concentrated form as tiny injections, it has a slight paralyzing effect on the muscles beneath the skin, causing the surface of the skin to smooth and firm. Good-bye wrinkles.

The FDA has approved the Botox aging treatment--Botox being the name of the serum produced by Allergan Inc.--for cosmetic removal of frown lines between the eyebrows, but most cosmetic surgeons do not hesitate to use it for facial wrinkles around the lips and eyes or on the forehead. It has become so popular that in 2005 over 3.8 million Botox aging treatments were performed in the US. But what that statistic does not reveal is that many, if not the majority, of those treatments were repeat performances.

Once Is Not Enough

While the Botox aging treatment uses such a weak form of the botulism toxin that it is entirely safe for humans when injected in the correct amounts to the correct sites on the face, the very weakness of the serum means that the Botox aging treatment must be repeated every few months. With an individual treatment costing up to $1000, having to undergo one four or more times a year can get very expensive.

You Get What You Pay For

As a result of the high cost of professionally administered Botox aging treatments , "Botox parties" and "medical spas" using unapproved forms of botulism-based serums have sprung up to appeal to those who want the Botox aging treatment but do not want its cost. In a notorious Florida case, some two hundred doctors bought a much stronger form of the botulism toxin over the Internet, at half the cost of FDA approved Botox.

They then used each vial to treat between fifteen and twenty-five patients, and there were at least four cases of those injected, including a doctor who injected himself, being hospitalized for months while their bodies were slowly cleansed of the toxin.

Is the Botox aging treatment safe? Yes, when it is done by responsible medical professionals using Botox. If you can find a doctor whom you trust to use the FDA-approved serum, and are willing to pay for the repeat injections, the Botox aging treatment is one that definitely works, and will give your facial skin a firm smooth texture which can make you look up to ten years younger.
