BOTOX - The Effective Solution to Look Younger
Posted Wednesday, June 21, 2006
The plastic surgery industry is witnessing a boom with scores of people trying to enhance their cosmetic appeal and youthful looks. Perhaps the most popular and controversial method is the Botox.
Over time, lines appear on your face where certain muscles contract, often around the mouth and eyes. Botox is a topical treatment which particularly paralyses some of these muscles, by blocking the transmission of impulses from the nerve endings, which tell the muscles when to move. The treatment results in temporarily smoother over lines, while other muscles in the face which have not been injected work as normal. In most cases, the facial expression is not affected.
Botox is the trade name used for Botulinum Toxin Type A (Botox Cosmetic) - a protein complex produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, which contains the same toxin that causes food poisoning. When used in a medical setting as an injectable form of sterile, purified botulinum toxin, small doses block the release of a chemical called acetylcholine by nerve cells that signal muscle contraction. By selectively interfering with the underlying muscles' ability to contract, existing frown lines are smoothed out and, in most cases, are nearly invisible in a week.
Botox injections are the fastest-growing cosmetic procedure in the industry, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). It is a non-surgical cosmetic treatment for moderate to severe frown lines. It is typically used in people aged 18 to 65. The FDA regulates Botox products.
How does Botox work?
Botox works by blocking nerve transmission to temporarily reduce the contractions of the facial muscles that cause frown lines. Within a few hours to a couple of days after the botulinum toxin is injected into the affected muscle(s), the spasms or contractions are reduced or eliminated altogether. The effects of the treatment are not permanent, reportedly lasting anywhere from three to eight months. By injecting the toxin directly into a certain muscle or muscle group, the risk of it spreading to other areas of the body is greatly diminished.
Typically the practitioner does a careful study of the patient's face and suggests the possible course of action. Doctors often use Botox with acid peels; collagen or often the patients own fat to plump and smooth nose-to-mouth lines. Combining two or more methods gives a more uniform result.
Botox is proven to be a safe and effective treatment for wrinkles, and Botox injections are becoming increasingly popular. The entire Botox injection procedure takes approximately 10 minutes and does not require anesthesia. Discomfort is usually minimal and brief. After the injection you should notice an improvement in your frown lines within 3 to 7 days, the effects of which can last up to 4 months.
Side effects are very rare. As long as dosage guidelines are followed, and there is a three or four month gap between each session, Botox tends to be very well accepted by the body.
Immediately after the injection the face may become red or swollen. Small bruises may appear a few days after treatment and you might see a tiny red spot where the needle punctured the skin to deliver the medicine. In some cases, muscular weakness or heavy eyelids are possible. But this is very rare. The other possible side effects could include headache, flu-like symptoms, nausea, squint/double vision, facial pain, twitching of the eye, etc.
