If you suffer from acne and want to treat your condition, you are fortunate to live today in an age of medical and technological advancement and creation. Researchers and pharmaceutical companies are constantly working on new and improved acne treatments for any type of acne out there.

As little as 15 years ago, teenagers were advised that the only treatment for acne was simply to wait it out, and it would fade of its own accord. It was also believed that the main cause of acne was an unclean face. Furthermore, teenagers were advised that diet and exercise has little or no effect on the prevalence of acne on their skin. Of course, now we know that the causes of acne problems cannot be categorised so easily.

Today, there are several treatment methods and products designed for those with acne, ranging from treatments you can get over-the-counter at a drugstore, like Lipovox, to prescription medications you can only get from a doctor. When compared to OTC drugs prescription medications are more expensive, but it is widely believed that prescription acne medicine does a better job of fighting acne in general. There are several prescription options for acne today:

One such treatment option comes in the form of retinoic acids, which are made from Vitamin A and are found in medicated gels, lotions, and creams designed specifically to treat acne. These topical treatments are applied directly to the skin and work to clear one's pores, increase the amount of oxygen to the skin, and eliminate or reduce skin bacteria that causes acne to occur. Tretinoin is the market name for retinoic acid. An isomer or variant of Tretinoin that is taken orally, known as Isotretinoin, offers an alternative for acne problems that do not respond well to topical creams. Isotretinoin is marketed as Accutane or Roaccutane.

Accutane is used by many as a successful means of treating severe or cystic acne and bringing relief to those afflicted with these conditions, and has helped to change how people treat their acne today. Accutane is engineered to change the DNA of your sebaceous glands, which are located in the skin and produce sebum (oil) for your skin. By altering the DNA, Accutane reduces the chance for your glands to produce too much sebum. This way, the extra sebum does not cause dead skin cells to block your pores, which mitigates the chances of you getting blackheads or whiteheads as often as you did previously.

If oral medication will not work as well for you as you would like, Accutane could very well be a viable solution. You should be aware, though, that in some cases Accutane has been linked to depression and suicide due to its side effects. It can also dry out your skin and your lips. Because of this, you should consult a doctor before getting on Accutane.

Antibiotic acne medications are there for those who do not suffer from severe acne that may require more powerful medications that cause strong side effects. As their name suggests, antibiotics reduce or kill the amount of bacteria on your skin that causes acne to occur. You can get antibiotics either in oral form via tablets, which can work internally to help bolster your body's defences against bacteria, or in topical creams that you can rub onto your face and skin. In short, by using antibiotics you can eliminate harmful bacteria as well as reduce chemical irritants and the fatty acids in your skin's sebum that can make your skin become inflamed and irritated.

If you are a female that has acne, you actually may see some positive effects for your condition by using prescription birth control pills. Birth control pills taken orally and in low doses can regulate hormones. Hormone levels that fluctuate have been linked to acne breakouts on the skin, so by controlling and regulating hormones, oral birth control pills can help you control your acne.
