The first and most important step before starting any acne scars treatment is to know your acne scars type. This is considered to be the most important step because you need to identify your acne scars type in order to know what treatment is appropriate and would work properly without further damaging your skin.

There is hardly any point in taking a shot gun approach by trying out every single acne scars treatment available without knowing what result is possible and impossible. Not to mention, this will also burn a hole in your pocket with the expensive treatments such as clinical and cosmetic procedures.

Generally acne scars are categorised into two - depressed or raised.

Depressed acne scars are sunken where there is a loss of tissue leaving the area to look like there is missing skin. The appearance looks deep and hollow. Raised acne scars are due to over production of collagen and tissue causing extra flesh on or around the acne scars area. Depressed scars are like ice pick, boxcar and rolling scars. Each of these scars has different depth, shape and edge. Raised acne scars are like hypertrophic and keloid scars and are usually red or pink in colour.

There is also another type of scars that is neither depressed nor raised but mostly flat. The acne scars area is flat but the colour is different from the original skin tone. The acne scars colour can sometimes be brown, red, purple or even white. This type of acne scars is called discoloration or more commonly known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or PIH.
