Can The Cause Of Acne Be Linked To Diet
Posted 31 July 2007
There has been constant debate regarding the role of diet in causing acne. Studies have shown that persons sensitive to the hormone progesterone should avoid all diary products, because they can cause acne flare-up. These studies point to male hormones found in foods such as wheat germs, organ meats, and diary products. Will these symptoms last for the rest of life?
Iodine rich foods such as shellfish, spinach and cabbage and peanuts can also cause problems. If you are an acne sufferer it's certainly worth abstaining from certain foods for a while to see if there is any improvement.
If you have a special sensitivity to a food, small amounts of anything - even soft drinks, chocolates will not make a major difference.
One of the more widely spread (and often believed) myths about the cause of acne is that it is caused by dirt or grime. It's more likely to be because of oily skin, in which case simply washing regularly with either a mild soap, special acne skin cleanser or even antiseptic soap and warm water can make a big difference to controlling and managing oily skin. And don't forget to keep your hair clean - again, depending on your skin type, your hair can also become extreme oily if not cared for properly.
After premature aging and wrinkling, the number two skin disease is acne. If you are a sufferer, you will notice that acne pimples have an irritating habit of appealing before an important engagement, a job interviews, a presentation or even an impending vacation. Testosterone, the principal male sex hormone, is actually the villain in the flare-up cycle. It is produced by the adrenal glands, which work overtime under stress. Tell your dermatologist about this emotional upset if it accompanies your acne attack, if he does not ask.
The bad news is that acne cannot be cured, but the good news is that it can be treated. If you're suffering with only mild acne, then some form of non prescription (over the counter) acne medication will no doubt have a positive impact for you. If you have bad or severe acne you will definitely need to see a doctor to get some professional advice.
Not all cases call for a medical expert. The occasional pimple or blackhead can be dealt with by an over the counter topical serum or cream with antibacterial properties. These should be used for at least six weeks to discover if it is working for you unless there is an adverse reaction or sensitivity. Follow the instructions and give it a chance.
There is acne surgery. It can open and clear blackheads, whiteheads, pimples and cysts. These blemishes could only be opened by a physician. Never scratch, pick or squeeze acne lesions; this will worsen the condition. Some pointers - do not use greasy or occlusive cream to cleanse your face which can clog the pores, soap and water are best. Avoid creams with hormones or corticosteroids added, beware of huge doses of vitamin A-they can produce serious side effects.
