Acne Prevention: Can Sunblock Help Prevent Acne?
Posted Sunday, February 03, 2008
Summer is just around the corner which brings about a time where acne sufferers are desperately seeking an acne solution. While acne is a problem all times of the year the summer months make acne a challenge. One thing we all have in common during the summer months is sunscreen. While most of us use sunscreen to help prevent cancer we don't think about it in terms of acne. Does sunscreen help to prevent acne or does it cause acne.
While sunscreen does have its benefits, helping to protect your skin from the suns harmful rays, most sunblock actually irritates acne. If you are prone to acne sunblock may not be cosmetically acceptable for you as they are greasy and will clog your pores. If you do have acne or acne prone skin, use a sunscreen that is labeled noncomedogenic (does not clog pores), applying it after you have applied your acne medication. If you are using a topical retinoid acne medication, which increases skin sensitivity, dermatologists recommend the use of noncomedogenic sunscreen.
A lot of people are under the assumption that the sun clears up acne, which is not true. A tan may temporarily "hide" pimples and blemishes but can increase the chane of scarring. Also, overexposure to the sun causes your skin to dry out which in turn causes sebaceous oil glands to produce more oil. Skin that has been exposed to the sun more often has more dead cells to slough, so combining more dead skin cells with extra oil and you have just created the perfect environment for comedones.
If you work or play in the sun look for an oil-free sunscreen with at least an SPF of 15 that protects you from UVA and UVB rays.
