The skin is the outermost layer yet can be the most sensitive part of our body. It's most common problem and perhaps the most embarrassing is the development of acne. Many people are affected by this condition; however, it is usually seen in teenagers that are starting to develop physically. Some adults are also experiencing post-acne wherein they start to sprout pimples in the later years. Unfortunately, acne is not limited to these two age groups as some babies are also prone to acne.

If you start spotting pimples on the delicate skin of your baby, don't panic. As sensitive as the child's skin is, baby acne is not cause of too much concern. In fact, baby acne does not require much treatment at all, but first, let's discuss the cause for this phenomenon.

The reason for acne in babies is that the child may still be affected by lingering hormones from the mother. The hormones are most likely transferred through the placenta which covers the child prior to birth. This is not uncommon and most babies are faced with this condition of baby acne or acne-neonatorum.

Because a child's skin is more sensitive than those of the adult, infantile acne treatments are very different from those of the grownups. With grownups, we tend to suggest medications such as cleansers, toners and lotions. However, these pimples will fade away in time as the lingering effect of the maternal hormone subsides.

The usual forms of acne in infants are pustules and papules. Pustules are whitehead with pus in the middle while papules are small red bumps like an upside down pimple. Because they will eventually go away in time, there are no special medications or cream for baby acne. Instead, usual care is provided for the child. Mild baby soap is enough for the pimples. Don't try to use lotions or other types of substances because baby skin is very fine and fragile.

Applying different types of creams and medication may only worsen the situation instead of improving it. The same with adult acne don't try to pinch, prick or apply any kind of pressure to baby acne. This will not only ruin the child's skin but will also hurt a great deal for the baby. Evidence shows that males are more prone to baby acne that females. However, regardless of the gender, the same procedure for the treatment of acne is recommended.

If you're scheduled to take baby pictures, it might be best not to apply makeup on the baby's face. However, if you are determined, consult a doctor first because some types of makeup can be very harmful for the skin.

Baby acne usually disappears by the time a baby is 12 months old to three years, depending the child's natural gene composition. However, if you feel as though the acne is staying longer than it should and is quite severe to even cause discomfort to a child, then it might be best to consult your doctor. If your family has a history of severe acne, don't despair because the child's makeup is not yet producing the body substances to induce acne.
